Lockhart Receives ESPN The Magazine/COSIDA Academic All-America Honours

Brooke Lockhart has returned home to Christchurch to receive additional academic accolades from her final year of her college scholarship in the USA.

This week she was named as one of the nine outfielders in the three Academic All America Softball Teams.

She made third team selection and was one of three from her district covering all of the Southern States of the USA. She is the second player from Southeastern University softball to receive the honour in its entire history. Overall the athletic disciplines at Southeastern have had nine athletes named in the teams since the honours inception in 1952. Since that time 14000 student athletes across all the disciplines and across the USA have been honoured.

She completed her degree in May this year with a 4.0 Grade Point average out of a possible 4.0. At her graduation she was one of the 13 students to receive a Presidents Medal which is awarded to the students with the highest cumulative grade point average. Her major was mathematics.

Lockhart was also successful on the softball diamond for the Lady Lions establishing herself as one of their top power hitters and helping the team to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2002. She was eight in her league with eight home runs, while also ranking among the team leaders with a .271 batting average, 28 runs scored, 45 hits, 10 doubles and 29 RBIs. She was a starter for each of their 52 games during the season. The highlight of the season for her was providing the team with its most dramatic win of the season versus Sam Houston State. With the Lady Lions trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Lockhart launched a game winning two run home run over the centre field fence.

To be eligible for selection for the Academic All –America Teams the athletes must be a starter or key reserve for their team and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 on the 4.0 scale and be nominated by her sports information director.
