The unit provides information on basic coaching guidelines, skills and drills, specifically for T-Ball. Unit participants will receive a Coaching Manual and certificate of recognition on completion of the course.

There is no cost for attending this Unit

INDUCTION UNIT

A 1.5 hour practical course for beginning coaches, providing information on basic coaching principles, training ideas and teaching basic softball skills in a practical session.

The unit participant will receive a Coaching Manual and a certificate on successful completion of the course.

There is a $10 fee for attending this Unit.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS UNIT

A 6 hour course for beginning and intermediate coaches, expanding on the teaching of the basic fundamentals of softball play; coaching principles; teaching methods and how to run a team training.

In addition to a Power Point Presentation, a coaching DVD will be shown. Course attendees will receive an Essential Skills manual and a certificate on successful completion of the course. Completion of the Induction Unit is not a pre-requisite for entry to the Essential Skills of Softball course.

Coaches who have previously attended a Softball New Zealand Level One Coaching Course, and wish to up-date/revise their knowledge, are able to attend an Essential Skills Unit presentation, at no cost. If such a coach wanted an Essential Skills manual however, it would need to be purchased.

UNDERSTANDING THE ATHLETE COACHING COURSE

15th May 2007

Dear Coaches

Softball New Zealand (SNZ) is in the process of replacing the present Level 2 Coaching Accreditation Scheme, as you presently know it.

The new “Coaching the Competitive Athlete Unit”, which replaces it, incorporates the following modules. This format enables deeper understanding of the various aspects of coaching our game .The names & the content of these modules may change as we develop further.

  • Pitching
  • Hitting & The Short Game
  • Catching
  • The Coaching Process
  • Infield
  • Outfield
  • Base Running & Sliding
  • Pitchers & Catchers (Battery)
  • Understanding the Athlete
  • Characteristics of Softball
  • Softball Psychology

Can I go straight to the Competitive Athlete unit?

No. You need to undertake the Essential Skills of Softball unit (or have completed the former Coaching Level 1 course) prior to enrolling in the Competitive unit.

Is there any point in undertaking modules from the Competitive Athlete unit if I have already completed Coaching Level 2?

Absolutely! Whilst much of the current Level 2 course content is used in this unit, the new modules are modified extensively to incorporate modern trends and practices. There are also new modules like Understanding the Athlete and Characteristics of Softball that are considered very important for effective coaching of our players

Will I have to sit exams again to pass these units?

The new coach development framework is more about engaging and less about exams. The aim is to find out that what you have learnt in the course can be applied in a practical sense, that you understand the skill, that you understand the characteristics and needs of the athlete and that you can design activities and games and apply them within softball training sessions.

There will be group discussion activities, power point presentations, homework in workbooks, mentoring and observed practical sessions. It is possible that activities could be signed off simply by observing good practice…however you may also be required to complete homework (or even sit a test) to show us your level of understanding.

Attached is a Flyer advertising the first Module to be offered in Christchurch – on Sunday 27 May “Understanding the Athlete”. Please have a look, and register if you are able.
