Next Level Coach - Pitcher foundation for coaches

Format: Practical in person session or resource pack for beginner coaches.

Programme Goals

To equip coaches with the knowledge and skills to introduce pitching safely and effectively to young athletes, focusing on correct technique, enjoyment, and confidence building.

Learning Outcomes

Coaches demonstrate ability to:

  • Set up safe, fun drills.
  • Explain pitching basics in simple steps.
  • Provide positive, constructive feedback.

Step Up Coach - 2 part series

Target Audience

Beginner coaches (e.g., parents, teachers, volunteers, new club coaches) with little to no previous coaching experience. Though experienced welcome also.

Programme Goals

  1. Equip beginner coaches with the fundamental knowledge to introduce and develop softball skills safely and effectively.

  2. Build confidence in coaching delivery, session organisation, and communication.

  3. Instill an understanding of integrity, fairness, and positive role modelling.

  4. Connect coaches to the wider softball community for ongoing support and learning.

Part One - Foundations

Format: Interactive discussion, small group activities, practical demos

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the role of a softball coach in promoting enjoyment and growth.

  • Learn how to set up a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment.

  • Develop basic session planning and organisation skills.

  • Recognise the importance of integrity, fairness, and respect in coaching.

Part Two - Practical Application

Format: On-diamond demonstrations, small group teaching practice, peer feedback

Learning Outcomes

  • Gain confidence teaching core skills (throwing, catching, batting, base running).

  • Apply session planning to real-life coaching.

  • Practise delivering activities with integrity and positive coaching behaviours.

  • Learn strategies to keep players engaged, safe, and enjoying the game.


In addition to the in person delivery, an online modified version will be offered to part one.

CSA aim to provide a safe and inclusive environment for our athletes.

We encourage all club staff, coaches, managers and parents to jump onto the Sport NZ website and check out the child safeguarding modules.

By creating an account with sports tutor you can record your progress and gain a certificate. All CSA staff and board members are required to complete the child safeguarding modules as part of their professional development.
